In the remarkable book, Conscious Community, the author sums up what I believe has been the guiding principle in all the teaching I have tried to do:
“Someone who is trying to educate through command and habituation need not pay any attention to the students – to their natures, to the way they think, or to their other distinguishing characteristics.... A single command can suffice for an entire age group, for it is not the student that is important, but the person giving the commands.... An educator, however, who wishes to uncover the soul of the child... must penetrate into the midst of his limited consciousness... until he reaches the hidden soul-spark.”
I have tried to reach the soul-spark of students young and old in schools, homes, workshops, synagogues, churches, mosques, and museums. Here you can see a few of those settings.
